OMG....I can't believe it! We didn't know Joan was not well. When I was in Baltimore in April, we lunched and caught up on happenings in our lives. Joan was a special lady, a REAL lady. Smart, articulate, attractive, caring. She was so proud of her family, most especially Max and Sam. She will be missed. Our love and heartfelt sympathy extended to Liz & Eric, Howard & Michelle and Max and Sam

Howard and family,
Joan and I would share our miseries when your dad and my husband were in the stages of dementia. We go back a long way......when Fort Garrison Elementary opened and we taught there. My deepest condolences and may the memories of your mother serve comfort to all of you.

Dear Howard and family,
I am deeply touched to read about the loss of your mom. It has been a very long time ago but I will always remember her as a very special lady. She made me feel welcome in the US when I was far away from home. Indirectly, she also inspired me to go further on the path of coaching through the many conversations we had about the psychology behind the world of politics...Your mom's curiosity for life will stay with me forever. Sincere condolences to you, your wife, your sons, Liz and all your family.

Howard - I knew your mother through her involvement with the Walters. She was such a kind and dedicated woman and a gifted teacher. I have such fond memories of her and she will be missed.

Joan was such an important person to me both in my life as a docent at the Walters and in my personal life. She was gracious, generous, fascinating, creative, endlessly curious, supportive, and fun. I feel very fortunate to have known her. I interviewed her for the docent story project last year. I'm so happy to have that and so sad it's the only way I will ever hear her voice again. My deepest sympathy to her family on this terrible loss.

Dear Elizabeth , Howard, and your families
I am currently in England with friends whom I met at Oxford University Summer School and all knew Joan from the years she and I went to Oxford together
Everyone is devastated by her passing and for me this is a huge personal loss. I was 12 years old when Teddy introduced our family to Joan. I started out as Larry's little sister but in time we became close life long friends. I will be in touch when I return as I have so many memories I want to share with you. I know Joan is in a better place and I like to think that she and Ted and Larry are together again
My thoughts are with you during this sad and difficult time
With love and caring thoughts

I still remember my teacher who really taught and cared about her students. I was in her first class at Fort Garrison. Mrs. Sobkov was classy and truly smart. I was privileged to teach Max as a preschooler. I am sorry to hear of her passing.

Joan was one of the finest Docents at the Walters Art Museum and served for over 20 years. Joan passionately loved art and shared it with hundreds and hundreds of museum visitors. She quickly became a good friend and made me feel most welcome when I moved here alone in 1992. I fondly recall our recent spring trip to see the tulips in Sherwood Gardens and a delightful lunch. You all are in my prayers and your family was blessed to have such a fine, intelligent, opera- and art-loving mother and grandmother. I'm envious!

I'm in shock. Joan was a wonderful neighbor when I lived in the St James and the smartest, always prepared member of the Monday Night Book Club. I'm sending love and condolences from Palo Alto. She truly was one of the best!

Joan touched my heart. Our friendship was't noteworthy for its length or its depth. But it is flooded with meaningful memories. I recall touring with her at the Walters, having lunches and dinners, and chatting together in Florida She inspired, informed and modeled. Her values shined, needing to be duplicate. The noted example was her devotion to her family. I really miss her.
