Dear Elkin Family,
My heart goes out to you. I know how hard this is as my husband has now been gone 3 weeks. Lois, I have a vivid memory of being in Munich, the elevator door at the hotel opened and there you and Alan were. I felt the bond you 2 had was very much like Jerry and I. Jeff went to school with my daughter Leslye. Saralyn was a joy when she came to Vasarri. So much fun to have her as part of our life there. What a wonderful family you have. So hard to part with husband, father, and granddad. My deepest condolences.

Dear Lois,
Michele and I send you, Jeff, and your family our deepest sympathy. We go back over 50 years with Alan, you, and Advance, and I can't think of a better example of how to run a business by the Golden Rule. You realized at the beginning, and never wavered, that it's all about people and how you treat them, not the bottom line. It would indeed be a much nicer world if more businesses followed your example. On a personal level, you and Alan were always good people, a pleasure to meet in any context or occasion. He will be missed by so many. We've been living on the West coast for three years, so we can't be there, but our hearts and prayers are with you.

Alan has always been a friendly neighbor and a very kind man. Over the past many years we have spoken many times while walking our beloved golden retrievers. He was wonderful. I will truly miss seeing his flashlight lighting the street at nights while he walked his pup. With his loss our street and our lives will be dimmer. May the blessing of Heaven rest upon his family during this difficult time. Rest to his ashes, peace to his soul.

Dear Elkins family, Alan was a wonderful soul and the great mind behind Advanced. While he and Lois were driving home one evening, he called me personally to tell me how much he appreciated a call I made earlier in the day. We got disconnected because of the weather and he called me right back. I will always remember that. Alan was truly a wonderful, kind person. He will be missed & he will always be #1 in my book.

Dearest Lois, Jeff and families, may these words bring you comfort in the days to come. With much love and deepest sympathies, Mary-Margaret

I gave you my love, and you can only guess
How much you've given me in happiness.
I thank you for the love that you have shown,
But now it is time I traveled on alone.
So grieve for me a while, if grieve you must
Then let your grief be comforted by trust
That it is only for a while that we must part,
So treasure the memories within your heart.
I won't be far away for life goes on.
And if you need me, call and I will come.
Though you can't see or touch me, I will be near
And if you listen with your heart, you'll hear
All my love around you soft and clear.

I'll always remember Alan as a man with a mission. He was a family man and a great businessman who always put his customers first and cared for their needs as if they were family. He encouraged his business family at Advance to follow his example and made sure the business he and Lois founded took good care of their business family, as well. He was a fine example for all of us.

Dearest Jeff , Lois and Family
How terribly sad to hear of your priceless loss of Alan. We shared a Cardiologist, Dr. Miriam Cohen,. This was the last time i i'd seen them, and of course, they were radiant! I notice Dr. Cohen has left a message, as well. Jeff, the loss of this incredibly warm, brilliant man shows in the beautiful, creative, son left behind to continue the Elkin Legacy. And how you have done just that and more! The memories you'll share shall be sweet and everlasting.

Paul Wolman
Sep 13, 2017 03:46 PM

It's wonderful to see the outpouring of beautiful thoughts and memories of Alan. Alan, and Lois were THE clients I remember most from my first professional days in marketing. And there was THE meeting I'll never forget. Alan's beeper continued going off. Each time, he'd say "please Forgive Me, They Need Me". He’d step out of the meeting to take a customer's call. The light bulb went off in our creative director's head, and we all looked at each other. We agreed - that was what made Advance not only unique, but special. Alan became the face that stood behind the product when every other copier company and brand focused on a feature. A copier was a copier, but no one was like Alan. And while Lois was in the background, we all knew by Alan’s actions that Lois was entirely right there along side him.

I can’t separate because I could never have a meeting with just one; even if that sliding door between your desks was mostly closed, it was never fully shut - Alan, and Lois, would each not only jump for clients, they were there for any of their associates no matter what. Honestly, I never minded the interruptions; they lived and breathed more than their stuff – they lived and breathed each client, each associate, and each partner. Which is how they made me feel. That just felt right.

I learned so very much from you Lois and from your remarkable husband and partner in life. It is no surprise that you, Jeff, live those same values. Because you have continued to run the company with the same values and priorities, I never had to call you about an issue at my company. Your fabulous team always got there first.

To you Lois, Jeff and Karen, and David and Bill too, Alan will always hold a very special place in my heart, a place you each share. I know you will miss him terribly, and I hope you can take great comfort knowing the imprint he has left on so many of us in the community.

Thank you Jeff for sharing the story about your father’s principles showing up at an early age, after hearing the company he was selling for couldn’t up hold their end of the deal. No doubt he never stopped living that, including always working to be No. 1…

Finally, if Alan had written this, he’d say Please Forgive Me for making this so long. I’d reply, no, Please Forgive Me for only telling a little piece of your story. Thank you for everything.

I am heartbroken to learn of Alan's passing. He was a gentle, caring man who made his living by understanding other people and being able to address those people's needs. It was my honor and responsibility to represent Advance for 30 years. Alan (and Lois) played such a large part in so many lives, including my own. The world is now a poorer place for Alan no longer being with us.
