Doug and RosaLea,

He made it though the stop-and-go and bottlenecks that slowed him for so long. So very sadly though, no detours left.

I know so many people feel empty today. Looks like this is the first post on the Levinson site. It won't be the last.

As I shared with my friends on facebook not to long ago... David Sandler was the very first friend I ever had. We grew up neighbors on Sanzo Road in Pikesville, Maryland. He was my buddy . I also distinctly remember as a 7 year old girl thinking he was the most handsome boy in all the world. True Story. I have held a special place in my heart for him for 57 years . I'm very grateful that we were able to re connect via facebook several years ago and stay in touch. I know he will be profoundly missed by his beautiful family , his loyal friends and his many fans. It's a very sad day.

We were deeply saddened to hear the news this morning about Dave's passing. He was one of the Mainstays at WBAL and well known in the community. He often stopped to get a haircut in the same salon I go to on a regular basis. Had many pleasant conversations with Dave there. He was a real mensch who determinely lived his life to the fullest despite all the physical obstacles he faced throughout his life. He glowed whenever he spoke about his wife and children. May all of you be comforted and find strength from the good times you had together. Baruch Dayen Haemet.

Detour Dave was a good friend of my wife & I. He went to school with my wife Sharon, I was lucky enough to coach David in little league many years ago. When we both started our careers in the 1980's, Dave used to come by my house & pick up the Fax Paper & deliver it for me to Ed Russell at WBAL. He didn't have to do this, but he insisted of stopping by & helping me out. I had the pleasure of playing softball & tennis with Dave over the years with many gr8 memories. Detour Dave was the DJ for my Daughter's Bat Mitzvah!! We will miss you Detour Dave in so many ways!! Our Deepest Condolences to Jody, Alix, Brooks, Rosalea, Doug & the entire family. Love always: Sharon & Ron Rabinovitz

20 years ago, i was taken under the wing of Detour Dave Sandler. I worked weddings, mitzvahs and private parties with him. I flew with him during traffic reports, spent time with him, Kirk, mark and lopez in the studio. Dave, you made me the professional DJ i am today, and for that i thank you.
You introduced me and made me a part of your family. I will be forever grateful for that.
Jody, Alix and Brooks, i mourn your loss with you. Dave will forever be in our hearts.

Writing from Waterford, Ireland, I have just learned of Dave's passing. Dave and I spoke frequently as I called in traffic reports for 15+ years travelling around Maryland. Friends would tell me they knew where I was because Dave would broadcast that "Chic checked in" from one location or another. He was a true professional and a decent person. My condolences to Dave's family. He left us too soon!

Dave was our DJ st our wedding back in 1994. He was great. I ran in to him from time to time and we chatted about Music, Landscaping, Sports and other stuff. I last saw him at a reunion concert with Baltimore’s Ravyns! His traffic reports, his positive attitude and having so many folks liking him will never be forgotten! Prayers to all of the family during this difficult time. He had been through the ringer with his health issues, but never would you know he was down! Class act! Better person! Prayers to the entire Sandler family during this difficult time and to the staff at 98 Rock and WBAL and to all the listeners in Baltimore that listened to him! RIP Detour Dave Sandler!! ❤️🙏🏻🚁🎧

To the loving family of Dave.
I was a classmate from Pikeville junior high to the graduating class of 1979 with Dave. Needless to say, from the countless beautiful words and memories, that surrounds Dave, it is clear, the impact he had. My fondest memory was growing up with Dave, playing in the wellwood little league against each other. Even at the young age of 10 years, Dave was revered as one of the most amazing pitchers, and all around great athlete. Just ask his catcher Murray Siegel. During this difficult time, we hope that you will find some comfort from the beautiful feelings and memories shared. My deepest sympathies.

Jody, Alix, Brooks & Doug,

I feel like I have known your family forever and what a terrific family you all are. I grow up with Dave when the school bus would pick him up at Fallstaff Manor. And that just started our life-long relationship. I cannot think of a nicer, kinder, and more caring person than Dave and I loved talking sports with him (and us going to see the O's together). My heart is truly breaking and my deepest condolences go out to you and your whole family. David will be loved by all of us forever because he touched so many lives in such a wonderful way.

To the Sandler Family: So sorry to hear of Dave's passing. I remember him being my first crush at Pikesville Middle School with his blonde hair and athletic physique. He was too into sports and academics to worry about girls! I remember him being so shy! We always joked about it when we ran into each other. He has touched so many lives. I hope your family finds comfort in knowing others care.

Dave was my friend through all our years at Pikesville senior high. In fact he was everyone’s friend, which made him special. He brought cheer to all and made a difference to those who knew him. Thought and prayers to your family.

We have such wonderful memories of David. Karin was a friend of his from Pikesville, Kelli's first internship with Detour Dave(riding in the helicopter with him and teaching her how to have the best senses of traffic direction and myself as his neighbor at Fallstaff apartments. What a warm and wonderful person... Our thoughts are with all of you at this sad time....Try to think of the good times spent with David. ......fondly

Dearest Jody and Family,
I can still remember when the two of you met. You were so cute! Like little lovebirds. It’s so wonderful to see a love like that sustain. David loved life, but most of all, he loved his family. He talked about how your house always had all the family gatherings with such pride and love. David was truly a good man. One in a million. So many of us were lucky to have known him. I feel blessed that I was one of those lucky ones. May your happy memories carry you through this difficult time. If I can do anything at all, please let me know. Sending lots of love and prayers to all.

I worked with Dave at WCBM NewsTalk 68 long ago. He was a funny funny young man with a great attitude on life and it is obvious from all I have read and heard since his passing that he maintained that humor and great attitude to the very end. We were all lucky to have him and we will all miss him.

It just doesn't seem right to be reading condolences about David. We sat next to each other every day for almost 12 years at WBAL Radio. He was funny, kind and loving. He adored his family and always talked about his mom, brother, Uncle Morris, Jody, Alix and Brooksie (back then). He also loved good food, his hometown teams and his jobs. Every holiday David sent me a text or called, even up to recently when he texted 'thankful for our friendship, AJ'. I will love him forever.

It was always a true pleasure to see Dave. We live in the same area and I recall the great job he always did at the Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving. I knew Dave's Dad, and while we were not related we played Jewish Geography through our families. They were two outstanding people, and they are missed. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to your family. May your memories of Dave be for a blessing.

Jody, Alisa, Nancy & families,

I am deeply sorry for your loss. I’m not sure if you remember me. I was the nurse at Reisterstown El and spoke to you from time to time regarding Justin. And I use to see Jody & Alisa on occasion when you both worked for Dr Glick. A couple of years ago I ran into you again when I took my Dad (Ben Weinstein) to see Dr Hoffman.

Although I did not know Detour Dave personally, the picture that everyone has painted of him shows a kind hearted soul who will be missed. Treasure all the joyous memories during the difficult days ahead.

What a humble, giving and warm person. Always turning his head around to talk to the person behind him while with someone else. A true gentleman and inspiration to us all. Just to meet Dave, you were lucky, to know him you were honored, to be his friend you were lucky, honored and wealthy. Dave, you earned a free pass for all the Detours you want. By the way, thanks for guiding me and getting to all my destinations safely while you were flying high. As always, be safe and G-d bless you and your family...
