I grew up as a neighbor of the Kabik family.

I grew up as a neighbor of the Kabik family. As a matter of fact we shared a party line and I would often listen in on their conversations until Mel’s mom threatened to tell my mother. Mel was a considerate and kind man and I am sorry to learn of his passing. Condolences to the family.

Mel was a dear and very special first cousin as well as a very good friend and neighbor. I'll always remember he would go out of his way to dance with my sister & I at family celebrations even though we were decades younger and just kids sitting at a table with "older" people. Always kind, loving & there when you needed his help or for him to listen to you. Ron & I are glad we got to Balto to visit with Mel & Ruthie a little more than a yr ago. Sending love & hugs to Ruthie, Terry Jeffrey and all their families.

Our deepest sympathies to you. The loss of Mel affects many far and wide. He was the prototype for a stand-up guy; Mel could always be counted on. Mel could relate to people of all ages. We were truly blessed to know him for so many years and to have him in our lives.

Love,

Mel Kabik was an American hero. He was one of the greats of the greatest generation..a tough Marine, a tender loving husband and father, an adoring grandfather and great-grandfather, and a steadfast and gracious friend. We were lucky to have met Mel and his beautiful life companion, Ruthie when Andy brought their daughter, the marvelous Ms Terry into our lives...Mel's physical body betrayed him in recent years, but his mind was sharp to the end..he was aware of the world around him and was never shy about voicing his opinion. Mel we hardly knew ye but were honored to have been part of your life for a small period of time... rest in peace you wonderful guy...We love you...Mignon and Rene

December 7,1941, attack on Pearl Harbor and the next day a little kid of 18, Melvin Kabik ran to the Marine Recruiting Office to enlist as a Marine and fight to defend this Great Nation in the fierce battles in the Pacific, surviving the landing on the beaches with rifle overhead in the water and Japs firing down on him from the hills.
Always proud to see the American Flag waiving in front of Gardenview Rd.He was a man of character and honesty.Just a few weeks ago at a visit with him and Ruth, he ask about any business deals out there for us. Dear Melvin was one of a kind. from the greatest generation that protected our country and let us live in freedom. a role model. a man of his word. a man of integrity. humble. said what was on his mind. didn't sugarcoat. talked straight from the heart. Always the truth. I will miss visiting him and listening to his stories and enjoying his company. i am grateful for the time i spent with him and lucky to have met him. always generous with his time and shared great stories.
the last time i saw him, i went with my grandpa. we were sitting with him at the kitchen table talking about this and that.  my grandpa fell asleep within 3 minutes of our arrival. But me and melvin had a good laugh about it and joking how my grandpa was really enjoying the company. Melvin never got upset. Me and melvin went to the card room and i asked as many questions as i could(as i always tried to do with him) and he answered every one. An hour later, we went back to the kitchen and my grandpa woke up (said it was the best sleep hes had and he should come by more often), Melvin was glad to hear my grandpa was well rested.
I will miss hanging out with Melvin. Thank you for being a good friend. Rest in peace. Thank you for your service.

Uncle Mel was one of a kind. He was always there to help and guide you in whatever you were doing. He actually offered his suit he was wearing . Many times Uncle Mel would proudly show off his tools and his tool room. My mom, Trish, adored him and thought he was the best brother anyone could possibly have I remember way back when Aunt Ruthie and Uncle Melvin took me skiing to 7 Springs. I used to live at their house in the summers and we had the best time. He always smiled and was glad to see you.
I will truly miss him and his happy disposition. You were so lucky if you had the good fortune of knowing him. Love you Uncle Melvin.
