Our funeral directors work with natural burial cemeteries throughout the region. We’ll help you understand the options and make the arrangements.

Natural burial with Levinson’s

Sol Levinson was the first funeral home in Maryland to be certified by the Green Burial Council.

Biodegradable materials and burial without embalming are part of Jewish burial tradition and our regular care.

Choosing a burial setting: Our directors specialize in natural burial and can help you compare cemeteries, including the settings they offer and the materials they allow.
Cemetery and service coordination: We work with the cemetery and your clergy or officiant to coordinate the service, including requirements for caskets, shrouds and grave markers.
At the cemetery: We bring your loved one to the cemetery in a hybrid vehicle, and a licensed funeral director stays with you at the graveside to guide the service.

Where a natural burial can take place

Options include natural burial sections in traditional cemeteries and dedicated burial grounds. An orchard setting with a bonfire ceremony is also available.

Dedicated natural burial grounds

Orchards, meadows and woodland set aside for natural burial.

Burials beneath the nut trees of a historic orchard, marked with natural flat stones, with mowed paths and a woodland sanctuary for gatherings.
A nature preserve and arboretum offering a choice of meadow, hillside and woodland burial settings.

Hybrid cemeteries

Natural and conventional burial within the same cemetery.

A green burial program at both the Berrymans Lane and Belair Road cemeteries: unfinished pine caskets with no outer container. Natural stone markers at Berrymans; traditional stone options at Belair.
A natural, wooded hilltop glade within an existing memorial park, with river rock markers.
Natural burial options within an established Jewish cemetery on Berrymans Lane.
A nonprofit Jewish cemetery with dedicated green burial gardens where no concrete liners are used.
On the Eastern Shore, a Wildflower Garden of native Maryland flowers with natural trails and river rock markers.
A historic interdenominational cemetery that permits green burial in any single-depth grave; there is no separate green section.

Consultation and counseling with a licensed funeral director
Transfer of the deceased
Sanitary care and preparation of the deceased, including refrigeration
Hybrid vehicle transportation to the cemetery
Coordination with all those providing other portions of the service, such as the cemetery and clergy
Obtaining and filing the death certificate
Temporary grave marker (as specified by the cemetery)
Providing a licensed funeral director at the cemetery
