Obituary

Dr. Albert Nahum, of Pikesville, Maryland, passed away on Wednesday, November 12th, 2025, at the age of 96.

There are some lives that radiate warmth even in memory, and Dr. Albert (Alberto) Nahum lived such a life. Born in Izmir, Turkey, he grew up as the treasured only child of Rachel and Leone Nahum—two loving parents who nurtured his curiosity and taught him to treat every person with kindness. From an early age, he moved fluidly among languages and cultures, an early glimpse of the openness that would define him.

Albert earned his medical degree at the University of Istanbul in 1954. During his residency in Samsun, he met the woman who would become his lifelong partner, Janset—a nursing instructor whose gentleness matched his own. Their shared heritage—Turkish, Italian roots, and a deep love of history and culture—became a cornerstone of their marriage.

In 1961, Albert and Janset immigrated to the United States, beginning their new lives with determination and hope. Albert continued his residency in Internal Medicine at Watts Hospital in Durham, NC and at Church Hospital in Baltimore. He went on to complete a fellowship at Johns Hopkins in hematology in 1965.

Albert opened a solo internal medicine practice in Baltimore in 1969, caring for patients not just as a physician but as a steady presence in their lives. He listened deeply, spoke gently, and offered comfort even in the most difficult moments. Near the end of his career he served as Chief of Staff at Church Home and Hospital. His colleagues admired his dignity, humility, and steady leadership, and many of those professional friendships endured for decades.

Despite the challenges of being newcomers when they relocated to the U.S., they never forgot what it felt like to be welcomed, and they extended that same welcome to others. Their home became a haven for friends, travelers, and many newly arrived families who found in them a source of stability and warmth.

He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His children—Aslan (and wife Jodie), Altan (and partner Carrie), and Elmer (and wife Donna)—remember a father who led with quiet strength, integrity, and unconditional love. His grandchildren—Amelia, Ben, Alec, and Aidan—brought him immense joy and renewed his sense of wonder.

Albert’s life was not defined by accolades or attention but by everyday acts of humanity: a reassuring hand on a patient’s shoulder, a warm welcome to a stranger, a word of encouragement spoken softly. These moments formed the true legacy of a man who believed deeply in kindness, dignity, and the goodness within each person.

He is now reunited with his beloved wife, Janset, whose memory he cherished throughout his life along with his parents and stepmother, Yetta.

May Albert’s memory be a lasting blessing, a source of comfort, and a reminder of the quiet power of a compassionate life.
