Barbara Cohen

Barbara Milgrome Cohen passed away on September 24, 2026, in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania, at the age of 90.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, on November 10, 1935, Barbara lived a life defined by devotion to family, Judaism, education, and community. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the Towson State Teacher’s College and a master’s degree from Towson University.

For more than 50 years, Barbara was a gifted and deeply committed educator who met children where they were and helped them recognize and pursue their fullest potential. Her teaching career took her from Maryland—beginning in Chevy Chase and ultimately returning to Baltimore—to Buffalo, New York; Jerusalem; and Chicago. She served as a classroom teacher, tutor, and language specialist, teaching Hebrew in the United States and English in Israel. Her longest-tenured role was as a teacher and Head of Judaic Studies at Krieger Schechter Day School at Chizuk Amuno Congregation, a school she helped found in 1981, that has long served Baltimore’s Jewish community.

A teacher at heart throughout her life, Barbara remained a champion of learning and possibility. Kind, generous, and brilliant, she encouraged everyone she encountered to pursue their dreams. She loved travel and music, and she took particular joy in the accomplishments and happiness of her sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Barbara is survived by her brother, David; her children, Neri (Ilene), Akiva (Fern), and Noam (Elizabeth); her grandchildren, Dena (Ryan), Joel (Emily), Hannah (Alec), Jake (Maureen), Ethan, Maren, and Charlie; and her great-grandchildren, Aiden, Owen, and Gordon.

She was predeceased by her parents, Shlomo and Taube; her stepmother, Trudy; and her beloved husband of 51 years, Maimon.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, September 28, 2026, at Sol Levinson & Bros., 8900 Reisterstown Road, Pikesville, Maryland 21208. Interment will follow at Forband Cemetery in Rosedale, Maryland. Please omit flowers. Contributions in Barbara’s memory may be made to Krieger Schechter Day School at Chizuk Amuno Congregation in Baltimore. The family will receive visitors after the interment at the home of Neri and Ilene Cohen, 10 East Lee Street, Apartment 702, Baltimore, Maryland 21202, with a service at 7:00 p.m. that evening and thereafter until Thursday night October 1, 2026. The family will receive visitors Tuesday through Thursday 12 noon - 5:00pm.
