Obituary

Bernard M. Benzer

Bernard Meyer Benzer, affectionately known as “Bernie” and later as “Boca Bernie,” passed away peacefully on December 16, 2025, in Boca Raton, Florida, at the age of 96.

Born on October 27, 1929, Bernie was the beloved son of the late David and Esther Benzer and the brother of the late Morton Benzer. He lived a long and full life defined by devotion to family, enduring friendships, service to his country, and a genuine love of people.

Bernie was a proud veteran of the United States military, having served honorably during the Korean War. He was laid to rest with military honors on December 18, 2025, at The Gardens of Boca Raton Cemetery and Funeral Home.

He is survived by his wife, Suzanne Benzer, of Boca Raton, Florida; his son, Eric Benzer, and daughter-in-law, Sandi Benzer; and his cherished grandchildren: Simon Benzer and his wife, Sarah Ammons, Paul Benzer, and Jack Benzer. Bernard was deeply devoted to his family and shared a close and enduring bond with his son, following every stage of his grandchildren’s lives with love, pride, and enthusiasm.

Bernie enjoyed a long and successful career in the men’s fashion industry, where he was known for his professionalism, impeccable style, and integrity. Never one to slow down, at the age of 70 he earned his real estate license in Amagansett, New York, embracing a new chapter with characteristic energy and independence.

At age 82, Bernie moved to Boca Raton and became a beloved resident of Boca West Country Club, where he fully embraced the name “Boca Bernie.” There, he continued his lifelong love of tennis and developed a new passion for golf, remaining active and engaged well into his later years.

A devoted sports fan, Bernie loved New York sports teams, especially the Yankees, Giants, Knicks, and Rangers. One of his most treasured sports memories was attending Game 5 of the 1956 World Series, when Don Larsen pitched his historic perfect game. He delighted in sharing such stories with warmth and humor.

Friends were one of Bernie’s greatest passions. He treasured time spent around a table enjoying good food, conversation, and laughter. His love for his friends, his family, and his country defined who he was and how he lived.

Following his retirement, Bernie became a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, reflecting his quiet commitment to service and community—values he carried throughout his life.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Boca Bernie’s memory may be made to Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland, an organization that held special meaning for him.
