Obituary

Diana G. Weiner (nee Garon), of Silver Spring, Maryland, passed away on Friday, October 2nd, 2026, at the age of 91. She is survived by her beloved husband of 68 years, Philip A. Weiner; devoted children, James Weiner (Vicki), Rachel Ann (Henry) Cross, and Peter (Launa) Weiner; dear brothers, Meir (Nava) Garon and Gerald (Susan) Garon; and cherished grandchildren, Olivia Grace Beatrice Weiner and Michalle Ben Joseph. Diana was predeceased by her loving parents, Shirley and Harry Garon.

Diana lived with a curious mind, a creative spirit, and a deep commitment to helping others. Raised in Brooklyn, New York and Portland, Maine, she graduated from Clark University with Phi Beta Kappa honors and continued her studies in special education and art therapy. Her career began in a one-room schoolhouse in Hebron, Maine, and grew to include teaching art in Watts, working in special education in Maryland, and spending approximately two decades as an art therapist. In prisons, mental health facilities, military hospitals, and other settings, she used creativity to connect with people whose needs were too often overlooked. Her work, including teaching at Shepherd College, reflected her belief in the dignity and potential of every person.

That same energy and compassion filled Diana’s life beyond her work. She loved painting and collage, collected hamsas, read voraciously, and found pleasure in animals, nature, and exploring the world. A passionate supporter of civil and women’s rights, she remained engaged in learning and the communities around her. She and Philip met as teenagers through Maine’s Jewish community, beginning a partnership that would span 68 years of marriage. Together, they raised three creative children, whose spirited personalities called upon her love, patience, and humor. A loving and enthusiastic travel companion to Philip, Diana brought her keen intellect and curiosity to their shared adventures. She leaves a legacy of creativity, kindness, and a lifelong desire to make a meaningful difference. Though Diana will be deeply missed, the world will forever be more colorful, more compassionate, and more hopeful because she was here.
