Obituary
Eunice Boin Shearer, 96, of Easton, MD passed away on Wednesday, July 29th, 2026, at her home, surrounded by her loving family and devoted caregivers.
She will be remembered for her extraordinary kindness, unwavering gratitude, quiet generosity, and deep love for her family and friends. Even in her final days, when she could barely speak, her words were expressions of love and heartfelt thanks to those caring for her - a reflection of the grace with which she lived her entire life
Born on August 7, 1929 in Baltimore, MD, Eunice was the daughter of the late Oscar and Goldie Boin, and the older sister to the late Bette Dahne (Herbert). She grew up in Baltimore, graduated from Forest Park High School, and earned her degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of Maryland in just 3 years.
While at Maryland, she met the love of her life, Morton L. Shearer. They married on February 12, 1950, shortly after her graduation, and moved to Easton, where Morton's family owned a long-established family business, Shearer the Jeweler. In those days, before the Chesapeake Bay Bridge was built, the Eastern Shore felt worlds away from Baltimore and to Eunice's family, it was as if she had moved to the other side of the country.
As a young bride, Eunice hoped to pursue a career as an early childhood education teacher, but there was no kindergarten program in Easton at the time. Instead, she joined her husband and her mother-in-law at Shearer the Jeweler, where she became an indispensable part of the business for more than six decades. Whether ordering merchandise, managing the books, or helping generations of customers, Eunice's warmth, kindness, and welcoming smile became hallmarks of the family business.
Service to her community was just as important to Eunice as service to her family. She was a founding member of Temple B'nai Israel when it was established in 1951, and she was the last surviving member of its original founders. She served in leadership roles within the Temple Sisterhood and as treasurer of both the Women's Club and the American Association of University Women. She also served on the board of the Friends of the Library, and volunteered at the Academy Art Museum, Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Partners in Care, the Waterfowl Festival, and Talbot Hospice.
Retirement finally gave Eunice the opportunity to use the college degree she had earned decades earlier. She became a beloved volunteer in kindergarten classrooms at Easton Elementary School, where she delighted in helping young children learn.
Family was always at the center of Eunice's life. She and Morton cherished their three children - Ann, Steve, and Sara. In later years, they were so fortunate to watch their five granddaughters grow up nearby. Their home was always filled with Holiday dinners featuring favorite family recipes like Eunice's famous brisket, laughter, lively conversation, and, for the granddaughters, the inevitable math questions around the dinner table. Those gatherings created memories that will be treasured for generations.
Eunice and Morton also shared a love of travel, visiting destinations including the Bahamas, Bermuda, Israel, and many locations in Europe. After Morton's passing, Eunice continued exploring the world with her children and friends, traveling to China, Australia, New Zealand, and returning to Europe.
She treasured lifelong friendships, faithfully gathering for monthly bridge games for many years. After moving to Londonderry, she enthusiastically organized Mahjong and card games, always bringing people together with her warmth and welcoming spirit. For Eunice, one of the highlights of living at Londonderry, was sharing dinner with friends each evening.
Throughout her life, Eunice possessed a remarkable gift for making others feel valued. She never missed a birthday or anniversary, faithfully sending cards that reminded family and friends they were loved and remembered. It was one of countless small acts of kindness that reflected her generous spirit. In her final weeks, as she became increasingly dependent on her family and caregivers, she never stopped expressing her appreciation. Even when her eyes were barely open and her strength was nearly gone, she always remembered to say, "Thank you" to those caring for her. It was a simple phrase that beautifully captured the way she lived.
Eunice Shearer is survived by her three children: Ann Beth Shearer, Stephen Marc Shearer (MaryKay), and Sara Shearer Koch (Christopher). She is also survived by her beloved granddaughters: Kendall Shearer Schrage (Matt), Rachel Koch Manning (Taylor), Emily Morgan Shearer, Hanna Koch Vietor (Tommy), and Melanie Ryan Destieux (Raphaël) and by her seven cherished great-grandchildren: Heyward, Beau, and Caroline Manning, Charlotte and Summer Schrage, and Lisette and James Vietor. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, and her sister-in-law, Tootsie Eisenberg.
Eunice was preceded in death by her parents, Goldie and Oscar Boin, her beloved husband, Morton L. Shearer, her sister, Bette Dahne, and her great-granddaughter, Margot Vietor.
Eunice often said she felt deeply blessed that her grandchildren all grew up nearby, allowing her to be part of their everyday lives and milestones. In truth, it was they - and everyone who knew her - who were blessed by her steady love, gentle spirit, generous heart, and the example she set of a life well lived.
