Obituary

Harvey P. Brilliant, M.D., passed away on February 18, 2026 at the age of 74.

Harvey was, at his core, a man of steady joy, deeply happy in his life and almost instinctively humble about the things he could do and the achievements he carried. He never led with credentials or accomplishments. If anything, he minimized them. Nearly ten years after he met his wife, while they were out listening to live music, he mentioned in passing that he had attended the Peabody Institute when he was younger and that he used to play. It was offered so casually that it felt like a small detail, not a defining chapter. That was his way. He allowed the meaning of things to rest quietly in the background.

He was exceptionally close to his parents, and that bond remained central to him throughout his life. When his mother died at just 63, the loss affected him profoundly. It was one of the most difficult chapters of his life, and those who knew him understood how deeply he loved her.

Harvey believed in staying connected. He checked in with family and close friends regularly, not out of routine but out of genuine care. He remembered the small things and reached out just to hear a voice or ask how someone was doing. Those calls reflected his steady presence in the lives of the people he loved.

He loved football and followed it with enthusiasm throughout his life. He grew up a devoted Colts fan and later became a loyal Ravens fan when the team came to Baltimore. Game days were part of his rhythm and part of his connection to the city.

As an obstetrician and gynecologist, Harvey's career was defined by continuity and trust. He did not simply care for patients; he walked alongside families for decades. He delivered babies who later returned to him as adults, and in time, entrusted him with the births of their own children. In some cases, he had cared for three generations within the same family. That kind of continuity was not accidental. It grew from the relationships he cultivated and the confidence he inspired.

His patients knew he was accessible in a way that felt rare. They called him not only during office hours, but sometimes in the evenings, when worry set in and reassurance was needed. They sought his advice about matters that extended well beyond medicine. He listened carefully, spoke thoughtfully, and never rushed the moment. For many, he became more than their physician. He was a steady voice in uncertain times, someone they leaned on as they might a trusted counselor.

He is survived by his wife, Jamie P. Brilliant (nee Parkins); his siblings, Dr. Joanne Brilliant, Dr. Margo Brilliant (Robert Schwartz), and Robert Brilliant; his adopted daughter, Kate (Tommy) Gauss; and many loving nieces, nephews, and countless friends.

Harvey will be remembered for the quiet steadiness of his character, the warmth he brought into a room, and the countless lives he touched through kindness and humility.
