Obituary
Iris Pevner (née Leibowitz) passed away peacefully on December 2, 2025 at the age of 88 surrounded by loved ones and her Chaplain, Rabbi Avi Sharfman.
A woman of valor, Iris faced a lifetime of extraordinary medical challenges with unwavering courage, remarkable strength and inimitable grace. Hers was a life full of triumph over adversity—each day a testament to her resilience, each year a victory of her spirit. Born on August 2, 1937 to the late Samuel and Doris Leibowitz, she graduated from Forest Park High School, the University of Maryland and earned a Master’s Degree from Loyola College.
Her career was devoted to teaching children with learning disabilities, served on the State of Maryland’s Advisory Committee for Special Education and was recognized in Distinguished Teachers of America. Summers were spent at Camp Saginaw—first as a camper, then counselor, group leader, and dietician.
She was active in community organizations including serving a 3-year term as President of the Beth Tfiloh Sisterhood and was a long-term client and volunteer at the League for People with Disabilities. Iris was predeceased by her beloved husband, Daniel Pevner; her stepdaughter, Cindy Ann Pevner; her brother Sheldon Leibowitz; and her brother and sister-in-law Milton and Eleanor Pevner. She is survived by her son, Stephen Pevner; her sister-in-law Janet Leibowitz; loving nieces, nephews, an extended family of close relatives, friends and former colleagues.
A graveside service was held at Beth Tfiloh Cemetery on December 4, 2025. Donations may be made to the League for People with Disabilities or a charity of your choice.
