Obituary

Jeffrey Mark Herrmann, 78, originally of Larchmont, NY and Washington Heights, NY, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2026. Jeffrey was born on February 10, 1948 in New York, NY to Martin Herrmann and Rose Herrmann. When Jeffrey was 13, the family moved to the Riverdale neighborhood of the Bronx, where Jeffrey also lived later as a young adult.

He graduated from Hunter College in the Bronx in 1968 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science. He then traveled upstate—“far above Cayuga’s waters”, as he would often say—to the Cornell University Law School, where he graduated in 1971. In 1972, he was admitted to the Bar of the State of New York and began his career as an attorney.

In 1978, Jeffrey met his future wife Sandra Hile while on a ski trip to Killington, Vermont. They married on May 4, 1980 in New Rochelle, NY on the front lawn of his soon-to-be sister- and brother-in-law Lynn and Bob Hughes. Jeffrey and Sandra then moved to Mamaroneck, NY, where they had their first son Benjamin. Soon afterwards they moved to a house on Concord Avenue in Larchmont where they had a second son, William, and spent the next several decades.

After meeting his spouse on the ski slopes he continued to be an avid skier throughout his life, favoring northeastern resorts like Hunter and Stowe. He passed this passion on to his sons, who both spent years of their own living in ski towns.

Jeffrey was an enthusiastic reader of history books and lover of opera and classical music. He could often be found spending a leisurely Sunday afternoon with a new stack of library books and listening to an opera playing on WQXR. He especially appreciated the chance to see a live production at the Met and looked forward to attending the annual Viennese Opera Ball.

Jeffrey is survived by his sons Benjamin and William; Benjamin’s wife Elizabeth; his sister Karen; his granddaughter Lake and grandson Ethan; and his nieces and nephews Elise, James, Kate, and Edward.

He spent most of his career as the principal of the Law Offices of Jeffrey Herrmann. He focused on a variety of legal matters, including trusts and estates, commercial transactions, and international law. As a fluent German speaker, he often represented German-speaking European business entities.

In 2016 he received a new professional designation—as “The Lawyer Who Said No”, after being featured in 60 Minutes’ coverage of a nonprofit organization’s investigation into money laundering. The anti-corruption organization approached 16 New York City lawyers, posing as an international businessman looking to move illicit funds into the United States. Jeffrey was the

only lawyer to immediately turn down the business offer, telling the undercover investigator, “this ain’t for me—my standards are higher.”

After Sandra passed away in 2021, Jeffrey moved to Baltimore to be closer to his son Ben and his grandchildren. Until the very end he continued to enjoy the daily New York Times and a good piece of cake.

A funeral service will be held at 10:45 AM on Wednesday, October 7, at the Cedar Park & Beth El Cemeteries in Paramus, NJ at The Chapel at the Sanctuary of Abraham & Sarah Mausoleum. All are welcome.
