Obituary

Jennifer Helfman, of Alexandria VA, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 14th, 2026, surrounded by family. She was 59 years old. She is survived by her mother, Harriet Helfman; her caring sisters, Amy Helfman, Emily Helfman and Lisa (Joe) Gottman and her beloved nibling, Rita "Terry" Gottman. She was preceded in death by her dear father, Dr. Murry Helfman.

Jennifer held bachelor's degrees from Oberlin College and George Mason University as well as a Master of Arts in Teaching from The George Washington University. Her master's project, an interactive volcanic discovery box, remains part of the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History's Discovery Room collection. One of her proudest moments was returning years later with her nibling and watching Rita explore the very exhibit Jennifer had created, a tangible legacy of her passion for education and curiosity about the world.

Jennifer devoted her career to teaching and consistently earned the admiration of her students, who rated her 4.8 out of 5 stars across multiple Northern Virginia Community College campuses as well as Prince George's Community College. Though modest about her talents, her impact was undeniable. In one memorable instance, so many students sought her out for tutoring after class, that the department reassigned her into the classroom itself, as moving one teacher was easier than moving an entire class. On September 11, 2001, Jennifer's instinct to care for others shone through when she immediately recognized the vulnerability of her Middle Eastern students and personally drove them home to safety before even notifying her own family that she was safe.

Jennifer was funny, caring, and endlessly curious. She was a gifted educator and a deeply compassionate human being who saw people for who they were, never for labels. She had a rare ability to connect with anyone, guided by a genuine interest in others and a deep respect for diverse cultures and experiences, especially those of her international students. Jennifer believed kindness was not just a value but a responsibility, and she lived that belief every day.

Outside the classroom, Jennifer delighted in photography, science fiction, Doctor Who, tarot card reading, and classic rock and roll, especially The Who. She was also a devoted fan of the Washington Capitals. Jennifer was fascinated by sharks, whales, and aquatic life.

Jennifer was a devoted cat mom to her beloved companions Dorian Grey, Shadow, Delenn, and Michael. She was also a cherished aunt to her canine and feline nieces and nephew, Holly, Cleopatra, Buck, and Jinny. All her fur babies thrived because of her playful mantra that "the needs of the puppy/kitty outweigh the needs of the human."

A memorial service will be held at Beth El Hebrew Congregation, 3830 Seminary Road, Alexandria, Virginia 22304, on Wednesday, January 21, 2026 at 10:30 am. A shiva minyan will be held at Temple Isaiah, 12200 Scaggsville Road, Fulton, Maryland 20759 on Thursday, January 22, 2026 at 6pm, with service at 7pm.
