Obituary

Larry Elliott Hornstein of Frederick, Maryland, passed away on Sunday, April 19, 2026, at the age of 71. He is survived by his beloved wife, Marianne Hornstein (née Brennan); his loving children, Matt (Melissa) Hornstein, David (Michelle) Hornstein, and Anna Hornstein; and his adoring grandchildren, Brennan, Henry, Avery, Easton, and Harrison Hornstein. He was predeceased by his devoted parents, Beatrice and Earl Hornstein.
Larry was proud of his Jewish faith, which was a lodestar that helped guide him throughout his life as evidenced by his regular weekend routine – on Saturdays, he could be found at Beth Tfiloh for Shabbat services. On Sundays, he would make the hour-long trip into Baltimore and go to the JCC to lift weights and ride the bike. And no Sunday trip to Baltimore would be complete without stopping at Seven Mile Market to pick up kosher groceries for the week ahead.
Larry was also immensely proud of his career in law enforcement. He started his career with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, later working with the Baltimore City Police Department and the Naval Investigative Service. In 1985, he joined the Drug Enforcement Administration, where he worked for 32 impactful years. The driving force behind Larry’s decision to become a law enforcement officer was pure – in his own words, he became a law enforcement officer “to make communities safe and better places to live and raise families.” It is without a doubt that Larry made his community a safer and better place. What being a law enforcement officer gave back to Larry was something more profound than a career and a paycheck – it gave him a second family and lifelong
friends that he appreciated and cherished throughout his life.
Larry was an avid Baltimore Orioles fan, easily spotted in a crowd by his signature orange attire. If you ever lost track of him, all you had to do was ask for the man in the Orioles shirt—someone would surely point you in the right direction. A season ticket holder since 1990, Larry grew up going to Orioles games at Memorial Stadium with his parents. He passed down his love of baseball to his children, playing catch and bringing them Orioles games on the weekend, a tradition he kept up with his grandchildren as well.
But above all, Larry was a gentle giant, known for his kindness, big heart and for the deep love he had for his family. His passing leaves a hole in the hearts of those who knew him, and he will be sorely missed.
Services will be held at Sol Levinson’s Chapel on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., followed by interment at Bnai Israel Cemetery. The family requests that flowers be omitted. Contributions in Larry’s memory may be made to Beth Tfiloh Congregation, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., the Sandra R. Berman Pavilion at GBMC, or the American Heart Association. The family will be in mourning at Beth Tfiloh Congregation after interment from 3 pm - 8 pm, and Thursday from 5pm - 8pm.
