Obituary

Leila Holstein (nee Trubin), a long time resident of Annapolis MD, passed away on Sunday, September 6th, 2026, at the age of 97. A native of Philadelphia, she graduated from Simon Gratz High School and attended classes at Glassboro State College in New Jersey. She moved to Annapolis upon her first marriage to Bernard Roth in August 1952.

In 1963, she moved with her family to Vineland New Jersey. While raising her family there, she worked as a nursery school teacher and was a substitute teacher in the public school system. After her first husband died in 1972, she moved back to Annapolis where she worked for the State of Maryland Department of Natural Resources as a Services Specialist until retirement in 1991. She also taught sunday school at Congregation Kneseth Israel Synagogue.

In 1980, she married her second husband, Dudley Holstein. They lived happily together and enjoyed frequent traveling and Naval Academy Alumni events until his death in 2005. After his death, she became a volunteer at the Annapolis Senior Center where she enjoyed helping and meeting people.

She is survived by her loving children, Valerie Roth (Ian Bacon), Mitchel Roth (Ines Papandrea); beloved sister, Debby Chep; cherished grandchildren, Kevin Nunez, Brian (Silva) Nunez, David (Brittany) Roth; Russell Roth; and Eric Roth; great-granddaughter, Savannah Roth; many loving nieces and nephews, as well as several step-children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren from her second marriage. She was predeceased by her devoted husbands, Bernard Roth and Dudley Holstein; beloved son, Richard Roth; and dear parents, Yetta Hirsch and Samuel Trubin.

Leila’s greatest joy was her family, and she was a devoted mother and grandmother whose love and presence were a constant in their lives. She found happiness in many things, including books, music, British comedies, Broadway musicals, travel, and mahjong; and she generously supported numerous charitable causes throughout her life.

Raised by a single mother during the Great Depression, Leila learned early the value of resilience, gratitude, and making the most of what life offered. Those lessons stayed with her always. Even through life’s challenges, she remained cheerful, optimistic, and remarkably positive, meeting the world with an upbeat spirit that those who knew her will remember with great affection.

Services at Kneseth Israel Cemetery, 101 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401, on Tuesday, September 8th, 2026, at 1:30 pm. Please omit flowers. Contributions in her memory may be sent to the American Heart Association.
