Obituary

Dr. Lewis J. Goldfine, of Pikesville, MD, passed away on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at the age of 90. He is survived by his loving wife, Louise Goldfine; his loving children, David (Elisabeth) Goldfine and Rachel (Ramzi) Sifri; adoring, cherished grandchildren, Jacob and Ella Sifri, and Evelyn Goldfine. He was predeceased by his loving and devoted parents, Abraham and Rose Goldfine.

Lewis was as a loving and kind husband, father, and grandfather. He was a good man, modest, decent, and a family man, who loved to laugh and enjoyed life. Born and raised in London, England, and coming of age following the Great Depression, he came from a very modest background. He was the first in his family to attend college and graduated from King’s College Hospital Medical School in London in 1961. He met Louise in 1958, during his time in medical school. He first came to the United States with Louise on the Queen Mary transatlantic liner in 1962, with all of their belongings sealed in eleven tea chests. He was offered a fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, and after completing the fellowship, he decided to return home to England with Louise. In 1967, they returned to Baltimore where Lewis worked in the Division of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Maryland Medical School. In spite of being offered a faculty position, Lewis decided to return home to London with Louise in 1968. It would turn out to be a short-lived stay. They returned to Baltimore in 1969 and Lewis began his career as a Professor at the University of Maryland Medical School. Over his distinguished multi-decade career, he played a foundational leadership role by serving as the Director of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Training Program, training generations of new physiatrists, devoted, like he, to easing the pain and improving the function of patients. He later served as the Co-Director of Rehabilitation at Kernan Hospital (now the University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic Institute). After retiring as a Professor at the University of Maryland Medical School after more than 30 years, he worked in his later years at the Social Security Administration in Baltimore.

Lewis loved being a doctor and teaching medical students. But his true loves were cricket (which he played from a young boy until well into his 60s), playing tennis, English premier league soccer, collecting stamps, and playing cards (poker and bridge). He also loved his family. He was married to Louise for 65 years. She was the love of his life and they were blessed to have a wonderful life together. He was also an exceptionally warm and loving father and grandfather. He loved family gatherings, vacations, and the simple things in life. He will always be remembered by his family and friends for his warmth, his sense of humor, his generosity, and his unwavering support and love.

A memorial gathering will be held at Sol Levinson's Chapel, 8900 Reisterstown Road, Pikesville, Maryland 21208, on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at 11am with family accepting and greeting guests beginning at 10am that morning. Private interment in England will take place at a later date. For those able to attend the service, the family humbly requests that you bring a story or memory of Dr. Goldfine to share. Please omit flowers. Contributions in his memory can be made toward the charity of your choice.
