Obituary
Mary Suzanne Dagold (nee McCarl), of Pikesville, Maryland, passed away on Wednesday, September 24th, 2025, at the age of 84. She is survived by her beloved husband, Reuben Dagold; her loving sons, Marcus Dagold, Raphael Dagold, and Jeremy Dagold (Colleen Dawicki); her cherished grandchildren, Nicholas Dagold and Samuel Dagold; and her dear niece and nephews, Charles Young, Laura Young, and David Young. She was predeceased by her devoted sister, Gretchen Young; her dear mother and father-in-law, Bessie and Louis Dagold; and her loving parents, Mildred and Charles McCarl.
Mary’s lifelong career as a librarian included working at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, Villa Julie College, the Bryn Mawr School, and the Gilman School; at one point, she detoured from libraries to play a vital role in archiving the Watergate Papers. Mary viewed her librarian career also as an educator, regularly recommending books to family and friends, posting book and film reviews on Facebook, and advocating for people and causes she believed in. She was a lifelong learner and was energetic about sharing knowledge and ideas.
Mary loved life in all its forms and delighted in new experiences. She loved cats, books, travel, birds, crossword puzzles, live theater, and ideas. She was a voracious reader of books of all kinds, from murder mysteries and literary fiction to biographies and cultural studies. She read several newspapers daily, keeping up with politics and social issues. Mary believed strongly that all people should be treated fairly and she was a fierce, thoughtful advocate for the importance of women in society.
In her circles of family and friends, she was the person who passed along news of everyone’s lives and who shared in everyone’s joys and sorrows. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew her, near and far.
