Obituary

Michael Alexis Anikeeff, 81, of Pikesville, Maryland, passed away on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, following a brief illness.

He was born on November 28, 1944, in Detroit, Michigan, the son of the late Dr. Alexis Michael Anikeeff and Josephine W. Obroslinski Anikeeff.

Growing up Mike lived in many states across the country, including California, Maryland, Michigan, and Indiana.

Mike graduated from The University of California, Berkeley with an AB in social sciences. After graduation, he entered Officer Candidate School in Fort Dix, New Jersey, then as an officer in the US Army, he served in Vietnam. Following his return from Vietnam, he earned his PhD from The Ohio State University in the specialized area of planning, community development, and urban sociology.

He was a prominent academic researcher, professor, and former chair of the Edward St. John Real Estate Department at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. Joining the University in 1991, he was an influential figure in shaping the University’s specialized real estate curriculum for over three decades.

With his easy manner and good humor, Mike was a popular mentor who enjoyed seeing his students succeed and flourish.

Mike received many awards, honors and recognition for his research and teaching. He served on several professional and editorial boards.

Prior to Johns Hopkins University, Mike was with the Urban Land Institute where, in addition to studying Senior Housing, he helped design courses and workshops to train a new generation of developers and real estate professionals. Earlier positions highlighted his expertise in urban and community development.

Mike had deep interests in architecture, buildings, cities, urban design, community development, art, music, theater, literature, Russian History, and travel.

Mike especially enjoyed interesting cars. From childhood family roadtrips, he admired the sporty post-WWII British roadsters, MGs and Jaguars. Eventually he owned several MGs, classic Porsches, BMWs, and finally, the crown jewel, a hand built classic 1963 Morgan 4/4. Over the years, Mike had been an active member of several specialty car communities including Morgan and Porsche clubs.

Mike will be remembered as a gentleman, and a gentle man, thoughtful, kind, generous, with a warm sense of humor, and deep intelligence.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Alexis M. Anikeeff and Josephine W. Anikeeff, and his brother, Greg.

Mike is survived by his beloved Laurie Stroope with whom he shared 36 years of a life well lived. He is also survived by his sister, Pamela T. Anikeeff of Washington, DC, a large extended family, and many friends.

Mike would want you to go for a drive in the countryside, travel to interesting places, discuss new ideas, find creative solutions, learn something completely new and different, have breakfast with friends, and take a hike.

A contribution in Mike’s memory can be made to the Anikeeff Prize at Johns Hopkins University to encourage socially responsible real estate development.
