Obituary

Tcharna Pesotchina, of Baltimore, MD, passed away on Friday, June 12th, 2026, at the age of 97. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Marianna (Mark) Gleger; and cherished grandchildren, Yelena (Michael) Shirkin and Paul Gleger; and adored great grandchildren, Selena Shirkin and Phillip Shirkin. She was predeceased by her devoted husband, Serguei Ioffe; and caring brother, Yuriy Pesochin; and dear parents, Fivel and Tsivia Pesotchin.

Tcharna Pesotchina passed away having lived a life defined by resilience, devotion to family, and unwavering determination.

Born on October 5, 1928, in the village of Kalinidorf in the Kherson region of Ukraine, Tcharna's early years were shaped by both the joys of childhood and the hardships of a changing world. She began first grade in 1936 and continued her education until 1941, when the outbreak of World War II dramatically altered the course of her young life.

During the war, Tcharna and her family endured a difficult evacuation to Tajikistan. Along with fifteen other family members, she traveled in a small, one-horse carriage, crossing the Dnieper River while Nazi bombings raged overhead. Despite the hardships of displacement, Tcharna remained dedicated to her education. Beginning work at just 12 years old, she balanced the responsibilities of helping support her family while continuing her studies and completing the seventh grade in Tajikistan. The family endured challenging circumstances in Tajikistan, with seven relatives crowded into one small room and long days spent working in the demanding conditions of a cotton factory. In 1944, following the end of the war, her family returned to Ukraine, and rebuilt their family home which was severely damaged during Nazi occupation.

With characteristic perseverance and a deep commitment to learning, Tcharna continued her education upon returning to Ukraine. She went on to pursue higher education as a finance major, graduating in 1954 and laying the foundation for the successful accounting career that would follow.

In 1955, she married the love of her life, Sergei, a decorated WWII Veteran who was a Commander of an artillery unit during the battle of Stalingrad. Together they built a life grounded in partnership, dedication, and love. Shortly after their marriage, they welcomed their daughter, Marianna, who became the center of their world.

Tcharna devoted her professional life to accounting, a career that reflected her intelligence, diligence, and strong sense of responsibility. Over the course of forty years, she earned the respect of colleagues through her hard work and integrity, rising to the position of Senior Accountant that she served for many years.

In 1992, Tcharna and Sergei immigrated to the United States to reunite with Marianna and her family. Surrounded by those she loved most, they made America their home and embraced this new chapter of life while carrying with them the Jewish traditions, values, and memories that had shaped them.

Those who knew Tcharna best will remember her as a woman of incredible strength, independence, and wisdom. Fiercely devoted to her family, she was a constant source of love, guidance, and inspiration to those around her. Despite the many hardships she endured throughout her life, she maintained a wonderful sense of humor and approached each challenge with resilience and determination. Incredibly strong in every sense of the word, Tcharna leaves behind a legacy of perseverance, compassion, and unwavering devotion to the people she loved. May her memory be a blessing.
