Obituary

Wanda Grasu, of Reisterstown, Maryland, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, September 15th, 2026, at the age of 72. She is survived by her beloved husband, Stefan Grasu; devoted children, Beatrice Lyath Grasu (David Donn) and Alexander Martin (Megan) Grasu; and cherished grandchildren, Liliana May, Aiden Sasha, Amelia Dillon and Luke Alexander. Loving cousin to David and Sali Greeley, Tamara Greeley, Ann and Jerry Rosen, Barbara and the late Bill Lambert, and Richard and the late Susan Grilli, and all of their respective children and grand-children; and survived by devoted friends, Laura Lieberman, Ava Barron-Shasho, Norma Schnitzer, Simona Goldberger, Lidia Marom, Gianpiera Baroni, Diana Zilberman, Adriana Sterescu, and Paul Sterescu. Wanda was predeceased by her dear parents, Salo "Sasha" and Elizabeth Noehovici.

Wanda’s story was one of extraordinary courage, perseverance and hope. Raised in Bucharest, Romania, during the communist era, she experienced discrimination and hardship because of her Jewish heritage, yet never allowed those challenges to diminish her determination to create a better life. After marrying Stefan in 1981, the two made the difficult decision to leave behind the only home they had known in search of freedom and greater opportunity. Their journey required seven attempts before they were finally able to reach the United States in 1983. With the invaluable help of the late Olga and Leon Grilli and Tirzah and Charles Greeley, Wanda and Stefan started over in Baltimore, initially living at Richard and Susan Grilli’s house. What began as a place of refuge became the city Wanda would call home for the rest of her life, where she built a meaningful career, raised her family and created a life filled with community, purpose and love.

Wanda was one of the few professional women working in construction estimating at the time. Over a distinguished 25-year career, she rose through the ranks, earning the respect of her colleagues as a knowledgeable and determined leader. Even after retiring, she continued consulting in engineering and estimating because she simply never stopped. That same energy carried into every part of her life. She was deeply involved in her community, her children’s schools, her synagogue and its Sisterhood, and enjoyed tennis, serving as a tennis umpire, and playing pickleball. Having grown up without access to radio or public libraries, Wanda treasured the freedom she found in America to explore music, literature and education, and she loved listening to and reading books.

Above all, her greatest joy was her family, especially her grandchildren, and she treasured every moment spent with them. Living close to Liliana and Aiden allowed her to be an active and loving presence in their everyday lives and activities, while she was always planning her next trip to Florida, eagerly awaiting another cherished visit with Amelia and Luke. Wanda love being out in the world, connected with people, and fully engaged in life. She will be remembered for the way she truly lived each day, with boundless energy, curiosity and love, and for the irreplaceable presence she leaves behind in the lives of those who loved her.
