Obituary

William A. Nerenberg, of Towson, Maryland, passed away on Thursday, April 16th, 2026, at the age of 86. He is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy Rosenthal (nee Lynch); loving children, Ann Rosenthal, James (Hannah Crier) Rosenthal, Laurence (Brooke) Rosenthal, and Paul (Heather Knutson) Nerenberg; adored grandchildren, Sheldon Rosenthal, Gabriel Rosenthal, Avram Eli Rosenthall, Ariela Rosenthal, Ma'ayan Rosenthal, Naftali Rosenthal, Zachary Nerenberg, and Eliana Nerenberg.

For decades, Bill played a meaningful role in shaping the cultural life of Baltimore, particularly within the classical and chamber music communities. He served as the full-time managing director of the Shriver Hall Concert Series, helping to establish and grow the series into a respected platform for musicians and audiences alike. His leadership helped bring high-caliber performances to local venues and fostered a deeper appreciation for chamber music throughout the region.

Bill’s commitment to music extended far beyond administrative roles. He was a Distinguished Visiting Professor at Peabody Institute, where he contributed his time and energy to mentoring young musicians to learn the Business of Music. His efforts reflected a belief that music should be both accessible and transformative.

A generous patron of the arts, Bill and his family supported musicians directly, including through sponsorship of performers with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, helping sustain the work of professional artists and ensuring that orchestral music continued to thrive in the community. His philanthropy was quiet but impactful, rooted in a genuine desire to uplift musicians and expand audiences.

Bill also helped bring live music to communities across Maryland, producing and supporting performances that connected people with world-class musicians in intimate and welcoming settings. Whether organizing concerts, supporting festivals, or encouraging young musicians, he believed deeply in the power of music to bring people together.

Those who knew Bill remember him as thoughtful, enthusiastic, and deeply committed to the arts. His influence was felt not only in concert halls but in the relationships he built, with musicians, organizers, and audience members who shared his love of music, and with the loving family he leaves behind. He will be missed dearly by those lucky enough to have met him. May his memory be a blessing forever.
